444. Alf puts the mixer in the bathtub. (2/9/1987)

image

So during these holidays, I’ve been watching season 1 of Alf. Whenever I rediscover a tv program I always fall into a Google rabbit hole.

I ran across several mentions of this one episode (”Try to Remember” from season one) where Alf got electrocuted in the bathtub and developed amnesia. NBC only let the episode air once before they asked the show to change the beginning of the episode because they were worried that kids loved Alf so much they would imitate him.

image

(original beginning from February of 1987 [archive.org backup] ) Note Alf holding the electric mixer, telling Lynn that he was going to get into the “whirling” hot tub.

image

(DVD/syndicated/rerun version) Alf says the same thing, but he’s just holding an old fashioned egg beater.

BUT, a few seconds later:

image

They didn’t reshoot that scene, you can see the electric mixer next to the phone. Also, Lynn’s hair is less curlier.

In the original, Alf gets out of the tub after getting electrocuted, and you can see he has the trope-y hair standing on end look:

image

His hair was flat ironed in the reshot scene, when Alf simply slipped and hit his head on the tub instead:

image
image

At the end of the original episode, Alf does a little Public Service Announcement telling kids not to mix electricity and water.  (archive.org mirror) This was taken out in future repeats.

So, that’s the Alf post. Probably expect another when I finish the series a year from now.

244. The Big List of Favorite Commercials

image

As is tradition, on my birthday in June, and on Christmas, I post a list of my favorite old commercials from the 1980s and 1990s.

image

“Burger King Christmas 1986 TV commercial”

Oh man, that 🎶Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing, Baby🎶 is almost like a Christmas jingle to me. I love how in the 1980s McDonalds and Burger King tried their best to make chicken nuggets office party food. It gets cold in 2.5 seconds!

image

“Pervy “Easy to Be Me” Panty Hose Commercial1980″

So stock boy gets turned on by looking at women’s pantyhose-d legs all day.

image

“McDonald’s Commercial with Cathy”

Why does Cathy deal with the same saleswoman every time she buys clothes?

image

“DuPont Silverstone Cookware”

I’ve always liked the Silverstone logo, but not in my omelet.

(Okay, so right after I began this entry,  I noticed this commercial in a block of commercials from 1979. Oops.)

image

“White Castle ad – 1982″

Maybe because I was watching this one in the middle of the night, but it almost brought a tear to my eye thinking about being homesick, in a dorm.

image

Ernest in ‘Quite the Little Shopper’

This is the Tab commercial I was trying to show you guys a few months back!  I found it! He tosses a Peppridege Farm Cake!

image

Tropicana Juice Sparklers

This was something I found 12 years ago from Simpsons Season 1&2 tapes a friend sent me. This is peak season 1 Simpsons commercials.

image

Toyota Truck Commercial

Jerry! Gerry! Jerry!

image

Handi-Wrap II Commercial

So what ever happened to handi-wrap 1? I love the lime jello dude.

image

California Raisins commercial with Michael Jackson

image

1990’s 1992 McDonalds Bonnie Blair Bacon Double Commercial

I’m mad that her mom is telling her gold medalist speed skater daughter to pick up the pace ‘cuz she’s hungry. Also, you didn’t see too many female athletes in fast food commercials back then. Nice.

image

North Shore Animal League ad w/John Schuck, 1981

Dang, back then they would pay for your gas if you adopted an animal! I know the quality of this is bad, but it is from from 1981….

image

Taco Bell Commercial (1995)

She don’t do burgers but she’ll do tacos!

image

Jason Alexander 1984 Lipton Soup commercial

At first I thought that Jason was in a full arm cast, but I guess its just a potholder glove. Also, onions.

image

Alf Commercial, December 4, 1988

(at around 1:01)

I didn’t know that aliens could squirt.

image

[BANNED] Burger King “Mr. Rodney” (1984, USA)

image

Spamburger Hamburger! (1992 commercial)

Spamburgers always look so good on TV, but once you make one at home its so icky. Burnt on the outside, squishy on the inside…

image

Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish“ commercial, 1990

I think this break is just a compilation of WTVZ (the FOX station where I grew up) commercials because there’s also commercials for Arsenio and Chevy Chase’s shows in there too.

244. Big List of my favorite commercials, part 4

image

(part 3)

I have a routine now. For my birthday and Christmas, I post an entry of my all time favorite commercials, and its sure as heck not Christmas. So you know what that means. I’m old.

image

Coors Christmas (1983)

Don’t you want that box?!

image

Burger King Steak Sandwich (1991) (my upload)

Who gives their girl jewelry at BK?

image

Gillian Anderson for Hardees (1990)

Who talks sexy on the phone, then meets up for a date in front of Roy Rogers (which is turning into Hardees)? O my god, she’s a hooker.

About 45 minutes into this ep of the Purple Stuff Podcast, they bring up this commercial.

image

Sealtest ice cream bars (3:41) (1986)

Haaands on Ice Cream! HANDS ON ICE CREAM!

image

Alf BK invasion (1988)

I had the “Melmac Rock” Alf with the Hawaiian shirt.

image

1987 ABC Promo Sidekicks Sledgehammer Ohara Spenser For Hire

(I re-uploaded this one, I liked it so much I saved it several years ago)

I love the stars of short lived shows, Sidekicks, Sledge Hammer!, and Ohara dancing to Gloria Estefan’s “Bad Boys”. Spenser for Hire is there too! Spen-sah!

Bless Pat Morita.

image

Mr. Ray’s hair weave (mid 1980s)

image

Taco Bell “Shaq Neck” (1997?)

image

1993 MTV movie awards (my upload)

Danger in black tie, too hot to handle, it’s the MTV Movie AWWWWWWAARRRRRRDDDSS … shown tooo many times in my mst3k tape collection.

image

ABC America’s Comedy Team [the critic] (1994)

This was a promo for the episode of The Critic where Margo goes to the debutante ball, and Jay hooks up with the Barney the Dinosaur knockoff. I read a blog entry recently that apparently nobody, nobody watched this episode when it originally aired because it was up against the Olympics, and the short program night of Tonya vs Nancy.

image

Rap Musk

‘know what I’m sprayyyyin’?

I was mentioned very, very, very briefly on Lasertime a few weeks back because I suggested this commercial for the episode about lame TV raps. I got too excited when Henry said my name. Way too excited.

image

Richard Moll 1983 Jack In The Box Nachos Commercial

Speaking of way too excited, you don’t know how excited I got when I found this commercial. Those nachos look really lame, however.

image

Star Wars Wampa

I’m pretty sure in Empire, the wampa that got Luke didn’t go around yelling his own name. Wampa! Wampaaa!

image

McDonalds All American Meal (1992? 1993?)

(my upload @ 57:15)

Aw, Rondell Sheridan is in this commercial that takes place in a typical early 1990s women’s talk show. What do those men want? They want burgers!  Super size!

image

Can we talk about Rondell’s Wikipedia photo though?

image

1990 Oldsmobile Toronado Troféo TV Commercial

These Oldsmobile commercials with the kids of famous people were always awkward, but I love this one because its for a car nobody remembers.

image

Dinosaurs and The Critic Commercial 1994

My two favorite shows from the 5th grade together.

Finally.

image

Taco Bell Rock Music Cups

I do not understand the purpose of these cups. Why were fast food places always wanting us to keep the cup back then? That doesn’t fly in 2017.

image

AM PM Mini Market 2 Hot Dogs For 89 Cents Commercial (1985)

Doesn’t the song remind anyone else of Flea Market Montgomery?? aka my favorite meme of 2008.

image

1994 Long John Silvers The Little Rascals Commercial

Didn’t this movie only make like, $3 in the box office? There’s only one of you, sweetie poo. I’ll hold, you scratch.

image

Thrift Drug (1990)

1. Why is he thinking about Massengil Douche on sale at Thrift during his vacation? 2. It looks like he made those thrift drug hamburgers out of the remains of his family. Perv.
