424. Black Friday though the years (Hampton/Newport News, VA), part 1, 1980-1989

I know everything is going wrong right now, and I know, priorities, but sometimes I really just miss going to the store. I didn’t do Black Friday in person this year, due to the obvious. I only went grocery shopping for my mom on Black Friday this year.

image

(Woolco, 1980 or 1981)

So beginning with the parade on Thanksgiving, I hopped on ProQuest and began looking at my local newspapers for their Black Friday coverage in the 80s and 90s.

I’ll try and set up the retail landscape of the area to the best of my ability and using my retail blog for assistance. Here’s all my information about Newmarket North / Newmarket Fair Mall. It started dying in 1989 when local retailer Miller & Rhoads shut down. By 1994 it was pretty much toast other than Sears, and around 1997, the former anchor stores were renovated into offices. Now the mall is all offices, except for the empty Sears which closed in 2018 and was one of the last locations in the state, and the Piccadilly cafeteria.

Coliseum Mall was the mall in the area until about 2003? when Burlington Coat Factory moved in at the old Montgomery Wards, and Dillards moved out. After that, things went downhill fast, and by 2007 the mall was town down, and was rebuilt into an open air shopping area with apartments and a big Target and a rebuilt JCPenney.

image

1980

Shopping was “fast and furious” at Newmarket by 11am. The stores opened at … 8am. Toys R Us and Lionel Playworld were new to the area.

image

1981

This is the only photo I’ve seen of this JCPenney location that was almost across the street from Newmarket North Mall, at the Newmarket South Shopping Center. I was surprised that it was still open in 1981, considering that Coliseum Mall had a giant JCPenney just a five minute drive away.

image

1982

Five people had to direct traffic at Coliseum Mall!

Unfortunately, ProQuest did not have the 1983 paper. Which I’m so mad about because I was born in 1983.

image
image

1984

Back when there was traffic on Mercury Blvd. Also, can’t you imagine a giant six kid family coming out of that giant van in the parking lot?

image
image

1985

1985′s coverage was half-rear ended. It’s truly bizarre to me to picture Newmarket North being busy. By the time my first real memories begin in 1988, 1989, I never remembered the mall being “busy”.

image
image

1986

Okay, so I had no clue that Sears was still selling real fur coats in their stores in 1986. I didn’t think Sears old fur coats all, even in the catalogs at this point. Miller & Rhoads had an on site fur vault at their Newmarket location. I wonder why those ladies weren’t picketing that.

image

1987

How could I forget 1987?! That was the year that the next town over, Newport News got their own mall: Patrick Henry Mall. Although in the beginning things seemed awfully slow according to this article.

Check out the Fisher Price vacuum cleaner a couple is buying at the Children’s Palace toy store at Coliseum Mall. I had one of those!

image

1988

As I said earlier, my earliest memories begin in 1988, 1989. My parents did NOT go to Coliseum Mall back then, citing that it was always so crowded. So I have no memories of that mall until the mid 90s.

{{ special }} My Christmas Christmas video playlist

saleintothe90s:

image

I’ve been building this playlist up for a few years now. It used to be just commercials, but then it became anything holiday that I liked. Highlights (because it’s like, 300+ videos now, oops) include:

Siskel & Ebert playing Nintendo

Roger also mentions that he got addicted to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the Nintendo.

Commercials from the 1989 Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade, aka the start of Christmas.

Daily Show holiday commercials from 2000

image

Those Kraft holiday promos during “The Christmas Toy” (which I wrote about a few years ago)

These Christmas toys are gonna get you with the Kodak Disc.

(so is Peter Griffin

Mr. Mackey sings Carol of the Bells

My all time favorite South Park moment ever, from my all time favorite episode.

The first Simpsons commercial break from 1989!

Martha Stewart Living’s Christmas from 1995.

I haven’t watched this yet, but this was back when Martha was super crazy. Federal prison really calmed her down.

333. Frasier: Miracle on Third or Fourth Street (1993)

image

Frasier: Miracle on Third or Fourth Street (1993)

image

Since its Frasier’s first year at KACL, he has to drive the office lush home, Bonnie. Apparently, Bonnie likes to have her way with men after a couple of drinks.

image

(why does Bonnie remind me of Susan Strong of Adventure Time?)

image

Roz gives Frasier this elegant suitcase, and he gives her a gag gift of a microphone that squirts. He didn’t even spring for that microphone from Simpsons that Homer gives bart for his birthday:

image
image

…which is funny because it looks exactly like it!

image

I miss it when Eddie would steal the show on Frasier those first couple of seasons. Also, Niles’ super cleanliness.

image

Niles Crane is the only person alive who can pull off this scene without looking like a horny ol hound dog. You see, he asked Daphne to try on some dresses he bought for his wife Maris. Daphne looks fine in that dress. Niles dropped his glass of sherry when Daphne said that the dress was so small she had to take her underwear off in order to zip it up. But she’s wearing tights? Was she being flirty with Niles…

Oh! Speaking of Maris, as you may know, we never saw Maris in the series. I always pictured her looking like JFK Jr’s wife, Carolyn Bessette:

image

but a little more haggard. After all, Maris shoots warning shots at the deer that graze through the garbage at the Crane family cabin during the holidays. Of course, Niles wants Daphne to come with, but she’s flying to San Francisco to see her Uncle Jackie. At Thanksgiving, she had to cut Jackie out of his pantyhose after dinner.

Frasier is PISSED that his son Frederick isn’t flying to Seattle to see him. Instead he’s flying to Austria with his mom to stay at the house from the Sound of Music….Freddy’s favorite film? That’s a stretch even for the hoity hoity fancy pants Cranes.

image

Frasier wants to put up a 1990s classic Christmas decoration instead of Martin’s traditional Christmas lights … chili pepper lights!!! I remember they were the first wacky lights that dropped back in the day!

Frasier and Martin’s fights about petty stuff used to be in every single episode in the first season it seemed. Thankfully, they eased off some in the ongoing seasons.

image

The entire time they’re fighting, Eddie is hiding! Frasier decides to not go to the cabin, and stays at home to fill in for Bulldog on Christmas Day.

image

I forgot that Roz had to come in to assist Frasier on Christmas Day! Dammit, Frasier, that’s cold. Her mom came from Wisconsin!

image

“It still traumatizes me … I wake up nights, and I remember that Christmas morning. I walked into my mother’s bedroom, tears running down my face, and I said, ‘mommy, mommy! The puppy Santa gave me won’t wake up.’“

The first time I saw this episode was in the Summer of 1994 reruns when I was 11. That phone call absolutely devastated me. I think I almost cried. I was having a rough time. My dad was out to sea.

You know who voiced Tom, the puppy guy? Mel Brooks.

image

I’m going to wrap it up here, but most people I think remember this show for the scene at the diner, which I will link to.

image

One last Frasier thing!! I almost forgot! The 12 Days of Frasier.

Every single time Christmas has been mentioned here at this blog.

245. Siskel & Ebert’s Holiday Gift Guide for 1987

I was late with everything this holiday. Even with my loves Siskel & Ebert.

image

The beginning of the special begins with Siskel explaining the Winky Dink & You playset re-release that was a sheet of film kids could place on the TV to draw along with the host. “Kids always forgot [to put the sheet on], and parents went nuts”. Remember when Muppet Babies had a similar setup?

image

Gene draws eyebrows on Aunt Martha. Ebert plays with the LJN VideoArt while Gene makes fun of him. I thought Video Art looked familiar….. I had seen a video years ago where a critic tried to play with it, and it was just awful. It mainly just drew straight lines, like the ones Roger made and Gene made fun of.

See? The man in the video I posted was trying to color. Siskel knew it was a crap product way back in 1987.

Gene actually suggests a Cover Girl guide to makeup with Christie Brinkley videotape as a holiday gift.

“What does foundation do? A lot!”

He also recommends a Larry Hagman (JR on Dallas) stop smoking instructional tape! Roger recommends A Christmas Story. This might be the earliest recommendation I’ve ever seen for this film, which as we all know by know flopped in the box office in 1983, but became popular through airings on TBS in the late 80s and early 90s.

Gene suggests Roxanne, which reminded me. A few days before I graduated from Mary Baldwin and moved away from Staunton in 2010, I was at the local library’s book sale. While there, I found Erols (the local video/tv/internet company at the time) rental dvds. I found Roxanne:

Erols video club

I didn’t buy it. These boxes were HUGE compared to regular vhs cases. Here is a commercial for Erol’s Video Club. Go rent a copy of the making of Thriller!

Oh oh oh, back to Roxanne. There was a man at my church back when I was little who had a large nose, and I remember thinking, “is he Roxanne?” because you know, being 4, 5 years old, you think Steve Martin is Roxanne because you’ve only seen the commercials.

Gene has that Panasonic VCR that came with the wand that you scanned barcodes with to set timer recordings more easier. Oh man, I wanted that VCR so bad as a kid. Now that I have a job where I scan ibsn’s all day, doesn’t sound so fun now. The commercial was one of the first old commercials I ever watched on YouTube back in 2006. Warning, scary talking hand face is scary.

Ha, Gene set it to timer record his own show. Roger then shows us a “super vhs” player, which was a format nobody bought. It was $1200! There wasn’t movies available for it yet in 1987!  Roger also shows a Laserdisc player, which they call “laservision”.

They even broke out the Fisher Price pxl 2000 TV that only shot black & white video on cassette tapes. They made a mini movie:

The quality is so bad, but I think Roger made a youtube poop of Citizen Kane.

Gene put on a Roger mask. Looks almost like the JibJab of its day. There are some hobbyists who still shot on the pxl.

Here is the highlight of the show. Roger & Gene play Duck Hunt on the original Nintendo. Duck Hunt, Super Mario World and Tetris are the only Nintendo games I ever enjoyed playing. ‘Just wasn’t into video games. Roger only shoots one duck. Gene shot two. Gene prefers the Sega Master System to the Nintendo.

I was so afraid that this was going to be me at The Force Awakens last week. Thankfully the real3d glasses fit over my huge glasses.

Gne didn’t like Barbie and the Rockers. He said that barbie didn’t look like Barbie and Ken didn’t look like Ken. He thought the Teddy Ruxpin cartoons were boring.

Gene liked this video though. Up Close with the little boy from the last few seasons of The Facts of Life and he was in the Garbage Pail Kids Movie too!

You would think that would be the worst video holiday gift, but nope, at the end Gene and Roger have their picks for the worst.

Gene’s:

Lady Lovely Locks

It was a video that was personalized where if the partent sent the video company a pic of their kid, the kids’s pic was put in the movie. Much like Rod’s mall kiosk video on The Simpsons. I laughed so hard at this pic of Gene. Then I hurt myself because I pulled some muscles putting away my food processor on Christmas Eve. Oops.

Roger:

The Zapper

Some report control attachment where you didn’t have to point your remote directly at the TV anymore. It was $25!

I found the controversial 12 pack on Pinterest, someone was trying to sell it on eBay way back in 2013. Aw, its cute.
